Overview

Knight EX series air balancers use an external hydraulic retract control so the cable or chain retracts slowly if a load is lost. Single, dual chain SDS, reeved and tandem versions.

The external safety retract control is an adjustable safety feature that regulates the balancer’s speed of vertical travel. If a load is lost, the cable or chain will slowly retract into the balancer versus suddenly accelerating upward. The hydraulic shocks from the external retract control put resistance on the thrust bearing allowing for a slow and controlled retraction.

The external retract control balancer series are typically used:

  1. If the fixture that is attached to the balancer is a light hook picking up a heavy part.
  2. If a part has the tendency to get stuck in the dunnage.

In both these applications the retract will control the cable/chain from suddenly accelerating up.

When specifying a pneumatic balancer, it is recommended for working loads to use 80% of the operating capacity for lifting applications. This approach compensates for the normal fluctuations within the plant compressed air supply. Working loads include part weight and handling device weight. Balancers are rated at 100 psi [6.8bar] therefore use the following example to calculate exact operating capability.

Formula for pneumatic balancer sizing:

Example: plant air 60 psi, 350 air balancer, 80% load capability (0.60 air supply x 350 lbs. = 210 x .80 = 168 lbs. operating capability).

Note: Knight recommends the use of high performance, extreme pressure, anti-wear food grade penetrating oil (Lubriplate® 1241 Recommended) that penetrates and lubricates cable. For chain (SAE 50 to 90 EP oil or equivalent machine/gear oil) is Recommended.

The BCS2213 and BCS2214 Feather-Touch Air Balancer Control handle is typically used for lightweight applications. This control handle is activated by an up or down movement of the control handle. Knight's Feather-Touch Control handles are available in a Horizontal handle (BCS2213) or Vertical handle (BCS2214) with standard hose lengths of up to 10 ft. [3m] (Straight Hose only).

Details

The BCS2215 and BCS2323 Dual Air Balance Control unit will support (2) different weights at Zero Gravity. For Lift Assist Devices (LAD) the first weight category is the unloaded assist with no part engaged. The second weight category is the assist with the part secured that it is intended to lift/move.

The weight of the part cannot vary more than +/- 2.5 lbs from the setting point of the regulator or there will be drifting either in the UP or DOWN direction depending on if the weight is more or less of the original set point.

Knights Dual Air Balance Control units are available in a straight (BCS2323) or coiled (BCS2215) hose that comes in standard length of 10 ft. [3Meter].

  • Controls (2) different weights at zero gravity.
  • Pendant buttons control which balance the operator desires.
  • Primarily used in hands free applications where the operator picks up a part and sets it down.
  • Dual balance creates a zero gravity for the end effector with or without a part.
