A custom overhead rail system for efficient, ergonomic handling

A custom overhead rail system is a flexible, efficient answer to lifting tasks in industrial environments with high demands on ergonomics, precision and productivity. It consists of rails with a suspension mechanism that lets lifting tools or hoists move easily sideways over the work area, keeping the load within reach and the workflow smooth.

For businesses with specific requirements, Lifts All designs solutions that account for everything from ceiling height and load-bearing capacity to workflows and safety. Each system is built around your needs and your facility, whether it is mounted on the ceiling, the wall or floor-standing pillars, so it can be integrated into new and existing operations alike. Width, lifting height and capacity are sized to order, up to 600 kg, suiting warehouses, factories and many other workplaces.

The system is light, quiet and responsive. Low friction means the operator needs very little effort to move the load, improving the working environment and reducing the risk of repetitive strain injuries.

What is a traverse?

A traverse is a flexible suspension system of rails whose tracks carry trolleys. A lifting tool or hoist hangs from the trolleys, so it glides smoothly and is always at hand when needed.

Lifts All offers several types that can be mounted on existing pillars, walls or ceilings, depending on the working environment, with capacities up to 600 kg.

Crossbeams and rail systems

When is a traverse used?

A traverse is used when a lifting tool or hoist must be operated with great flexibility across a working area. Unlike a jib crane it is stationary, but it covers a larger area. It is highly adaptable, with flexible spans and high capacity, and handles all Lifts All lifting tools up to 600 kg.

Lifts All rail systems run extremely smoothly and quietly, which is essential where items are lifted frequently. Compared with similar lightweight crane systems, operators need only about one third of the effort to move a load, and less physical effort usually means more efficient handling.

Crossbeams for different ceiling heights and spans

The systems suit both low and high ceilings. Under a very high ceiling the rail can be lowered; around four metres is often optimal, leaving room to work and to drive forklifts underneath without collisions. For low ceilings a low-profile design is available.

Tracks can be long or short. Typical spans are 2 to 6 m, yet very large, virtually unlimited areas can be covered. A telescopic track can extend reach beyond the rail coverage, and existing Lifts All rail systems can be modified, for example to expand them over time.

Types of overhead rail systems

Different designs are available to suit your work environment and lifting operations:

Ceiling-mounted

Ceiling mounting is usually best, as it keeps the system clear of people on the floor and requires no pillar gantries for anchoring, leaving the space as uncluttered as possible. If the ceiling cannot carry the load, floor or wall mounting is possible.

Floor-mounted

Floor-mounted systems are common where the ceiling lacks sufficient load-bearing capacity. They are built either on pillars, giving great design flexibility, or on arches, giving greater structural stability. Under high ceilings a floor-mounted system is often the better fit, as the shorter suspension length keeps lifting stable.

Wall-mounted

Wall-mounted systems are fixed to the wall, so no special load-bearing capacity is required in the ceiling.

Rail systems for clean rooms

The standard rails are suitable for clean rooms. Cover strips can seal the grooves so that dirt cannot collect in the track, meeting the cleanliness requirements of industries such as pharmaceuticals and food.

Traverse, overhead crane and hoist: the differences

Traverse

A rail system with a suspension mechanism: beams with tracks on which trolleys run, and from which lifting tools or hoists are suspended.

Overhead crane

Very similar in purpose to a traverse, but designed for heavier loads. An overhead crane is typically motor-driven, whereas Lifts All traverses are moved by hand.

Hoist

A hoist can hang from a crane and, like a lifting tool, is used for lifting. However, Lifts All lifting tools are powered by a pneumatic cylinder, while a hoist is a trolley with a motor-driven lifting block, usually with a chain or rope and hook. A hoist can be limited as a lifting device, whereas a lifting tool is made precisely for what it lifts. A lifting tool is also more dynamic, moving up and down smoothly and continuously, while a hoist is often more static.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an overhead rail system cost?

The cost depends on the required length, the space where it will be installed and the lifting capacity. A high ceiling may call for suspension from the ceiling; a ceiling that is weak or hard to access may call for pillars. Quotations are prepared to match your needs.

What should you consider when buying one?

Simply describe your needs: what you lift, how you want to lift it and in what environment. Sales engineers often visit the site to determine exactly the design needed for the best possible rail system.

Is training needed to operate a traverse?

In most cases the traverse carries Lifts All lifting tools. Training on the tools is always provided, and they are adjusted to their intended use at the same time.
