Why sheet loading is the bottleneck of a cutting shop
Modern fiber lasers cut very fast, but loading sheets onto the table is still done by hand or forklift. A 1500 x 3000 mm steel sheet 3–10 mm thick weighs 100–350 kg; manual handling needs several people, bends and scratches sheets and risks cut hands and crushed feet. Meanwhile the cutter sits idle.
A vacuum lift assist lets one operator pick a sheet from the rack or pallet, lift it, swing the arm and place it precisely on the table, cutting waiting time and raising machine utilisation.
How a vacuum lifter works
A vacuum lifter is a frame with several rubber pads. When vacuum is created between the pads and the sheet, atmospheric pressure presses the pads firmly onto the surface. Holding force depends on pad area, vacuum level and how flat and clean the surface is. Standard lifters have a safety factor of at least 2, a vacuum gauge and a low-vacuum alarm.

A complete sheet loading system
- Lifting structure: 500 kg rail jib crane, ceiling-mounted rail or freestanding frame covering the sheet rack and cutting table.
- Hoist: electric hoist or servo balancing hoist with slow speed for placing.
- Vacuum lifter: pad layout matched to the sheet size (1250 x 2500, 1500 x 3000, 2000 x 6000 mm…), spring-loaded pads for uneven sheets.
- Safety: check valve, vacuum reservoir holding vacuum on power loss, horn and warning light.

How heavy a sheet can a vacuum lifter handle?
From 50 kg to over 1000 kg depending on the number of pads; cutter loading projects typically use 200–500 kg lifters.
Is a power failure during lifting dangerous?
The lifter has a check valve and reservoir that hold vacuum long enough to lower the sheet safely, with an alarm.
Can oily or rusty sheets be lifted?
Lightly oiled surfaces are fine with the right pads; flaking rust reduces holding force, so clean the surface first.
Which vacuum lifter should I choose?
